Me: Hello Mr. James Jean! I made you a drawing!
James Jean: Oh thank you, is this me?
Me: .... Uhm, no. Please sign my Notebook too oh my god I feel creepy.

James Jean was here in Manila on the first week of the New year! It was my first time meeting him, so I decided to go to his Book Signing in Fully Booked Katipunan last January 6th. I didn't have a book for him so sign, but I offered a drawing.

I would have given him some Choc-Nut too, but the nearby stall didn't have any available. Talk about a last minute idea. Don't think he'd accept food though, security reasons perhaps.

I also had a scrapbook signed and he drew on a page.

I would have gone to his Artist talk in Ateneo after his Book signing event, but I had my techniques class. But still, yay!

UP Lantern Parade Costume

UP Diliman celebrated it's Annual Lantern Parade last December 16, 2011, and my class participated in the said event. College of Fine Arts is the lone member of the event's Hall of Fame, so we celebrated with our own theme, "Pilipinas, Noon and Ngayon" (Philippines: Then and Now).

Our Materials II class chose Food as our theme. We divided our class by pairs; one partner represents a Filipino food "then", while the other represents a corresponding food "Now". My costume is a Bucket of Fried chicken while my partner's costume is Lechon (Roasted Pig).

Parol Project

My Brother has had his Grade School Parol project lying around the house for years. The frames started to fade and the inside of the parol had started collecting dust. Because it's the Christmas season, we decided to restore it.

I decided I would remove the Belen and replace it with a stained glass style drawing of baby Jesus in the middle. Had some mistakes with the color of His hair, but my family is satisfied.

I also painted the frames black, and replaced the red cellophane with yellow Japanese paper.

Techniques II: Watercolor

Final Plate for Materials

For our final plate, we were to make a geometric figure of an animal or human, applying the techniques we have learned in using paper, along with an additional material. The color scheme was two toned.

The medium I used was a collection of found used illustration boards. I've sanded the edges as if the work was wood, and applied acrylic paint on the surfaces. The dimensions were based on my own measurements.

It was my second exhibit and I'm still being an anti social loser!

This photo of my work was taken by a friend at the opening of "Reclaiming Innocence", a group exhibit featuring works of me and my friends in UP CFA (aka Studio Y). Half of the profit from the works sold are given to Tahan-Tahanan, a halfway home for the children with non-communicable diseases and their family/caregivers who come from the provinces and seek treatment in Metro Manila hospitals.

The work is based on a photo of myself as a toddler. See my process below.

Plate no. 4 :"Personalities of Paper"

Our Fourth Materials plate required us to make a Paper relief sculpture / caricature featuring a celebrity. I chose John Lloyd Cruz!

To those unfamiliar with John Lloyd (and probably too lazy to read the Wikipedia Article), some few "facts" :

He is a Filipino Actor, famous for starring in RomCom movies such as One More Chance and A Very Special Love.

The most relevant movie of Pinoy Pop Culture!
While not endowed with the most handsome of looks common in just about any heartthrob, this man has a killer charm that, though incredibly cheesy, has won the hearts of many Filipina women for the past half decade.
This cheesy charm has been the center of Greenwich's current ad campain, what you would call "Sobrang Cheesy", to promote their Extreme Cheese Pizzas.
I, too, have fallen for the John Lloyd Charm!

You may have guessed that these "facts" are part of why my plate has turned into a pseudo Greenwich Commercial. My plate fell flat, as it was supposed to be a sculpture. But I took advantage of detailing the image to give it an illusion that it's Three dimensional.

Our Second plate is an exercise on how to compose using "Variables of Basic Elements of Design", the variables being (1) Size; (2) Shape; (3) Position, and; (4) Direction.

The fifth drawing required us to show Sequential transformation of the items that we have used as subjects, mine being different necklaces my mother got for me from her trip to Boracay.

Techniques Class Selected Plates (Pre Midterm)

Probably the class with the most time pressure and emotional stress, but with great results.

My professor has had us repeat plates with the same instruction every meeting. The first three were based on lines.

Soon after, we moved on to technical drawings. In the first few meetings, we made various designs based on cubes. No ruler should be used for either rendering or making cube dimensions as guides. We were also required to incorporate spheres in two out of four designs per meeting.
After two to three meetings of producing different designs, we were to select at least three and incorporate them in the succeeding plates as shown below.

I have some number of plates done (and documented!) but due to the current work load I haven't been posting in this blog yet. So far, I have made:

All sorts of technical drawings for Techniques class

Other that these, I'm also working on my next Materials plate. "The Box Part 2" will be a pop up plate, using the same materials as the first one (bristol board).

I will also be joining UP Artist Circle Sorority's FRESHLY SQUEEZED, an annual exhibit showing works of Freshmen in UP CFA. Because they are asking for works done in 2011, I decided to make a new one.

Classes started this week and so much has happened I can't believe it's only Wednesday!

First, an update on the flyers:

250 in total!

June 6, I signed a contract with Malate Literary Folio as their first sponsor for Reinkarnasyon ng Salita. This event celebrates Linggo ng Wika, as well as launching this year's first issue.

And with that, there is no turning back.

This Monday, I delivered the flyers and they shall be circulated along with the issues by August.

As I've said, Classes started this week. But because I have entered UP as a new freshman, it's Freshman Orientation the second time around. June 13 was our College Assembly and June 14 was the Freshmen Assembly.

As our College Secretary has told us, our college always has a gimmick! A black shirt was a dead give away. We did not expect a headdress. And because we are now part of UPCFA, most of us made our own headdress.

Mine was a Tiara.

The Orange lace came from my grandmother's dress. As to why it's even at that state, I'm not so sure anymore. This bow was part of it, though not included in the headdress I made

I've put crocheting on hold for a while and started making illustrations for flyers. Why I'm even making flyers, that's a secret.

Classes start on June 14 and I have been unemployed for the past 2-3 months.

While the first few weeks of unemployment got me drawing my comics, the weeks that came after haven't been so productive. Since my friends have been on their summer vacation, I've spent the past few months going to the beach, hanging out at the mall and other things.

Pictured: other things. Never be unemployed, kids.

On days when I'm not out with friends, I've been crocheting. I've been on the hook for about a month now and I have made two hats. You can say I'm stocking up for winter, like that exists in the Philippines.

But what I'm actually stocking up for is a small venture I'm planning some few months from now. Other that the hats, I've been making some bracelets and other accessories with the scrap cloth here at home. I'd be selling the stuff, along with in bazaars around Manila to hopefully make a few bucks to pay off my art materials. More on that news soon.

This drawing hiatus may still go on until the first week of June. Could spell good news for me, though; I need a break from ink for a while.

Taken during my first few days of residency in Malate Literary Folio.

The Org had a weekly award called "Tambay Champion / Office Overlord" (which ever version you prefer), where in the member with the most residency minutes for the week is rewarded with no residency minutes required for the next week, as well as bragging rights. But those who do get to gain the week long title stay in the office anyway, so they're left with bragging rights.

And I won that award quite a few times.
